June Events in History

This month we have a contrast in our events:
• the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day invasion / various countries' involvement in WWII
• the history of the FIFA World Cup on stamps
It would be nice to think that all conflicts between nations would be on the order of competitions on the pitch or some other athletic field, rather than on a beachhead or some other wartime battlefield. And so, as we post this June Stamp News Online, let’s keep in mind that we are able to enjoy the World Cup because of the sacrifices of those we honored on Memorial Day.

The world’s most popular sport, football—known in the United States as soccer—has elements that trace back to ancient Greece and Rome, but the rules of the sport as we know it today came into fruition in the mid-19th Century in England, where various forms of the game were played as far back as the eight century.
