July - Events in History

Again, with the help of a teacher's calendar this July's display covers an interesting and varied collection of stamps. From this calendar it was brought to my attention that on July 6th the first picture postcard was made. Even though I could not verify the July 6th date, I have included a sample of a handpainted and printed postcard. Of particular interest was the old handpainted picture postcard of postal workers dating back to 1840, which carries the Penny Black stamp. The article about this postcard claimed it was the "oldest postcard" depicting caricatures of postal workers gathered round an immense inkwell.

Also, included with this months stamp collection are an Amelia Earhart movie trailer (July 24); olympic swimmer and actor, Johnny Weissmuller (July 9); first flight of the Boeing 707 (July 15); the opening of Disneyland (July 17); and much more. Please enjoy the variety of July events that sparked the creation of a singular postage stamp!
