August - World Stamp Shows from 1890 . . .

In May of 2016 many of us headed to New York City for The Eleventh U.S. International Philatelic Exhibition, May 28-June 4, 2016. With that in mind and the many past philatelic exhibitions held worldwide we have assembled stamps, covers, and items of interest from 1890 (The London Philatelic Exhibition) to 2016.

1890 London Philatelic Exhibition (Click for larger image.)

The London Philatelic Exhibition 1890 was held 19-26 May at the Portman Rooms, Baker Street, London. It was one of the first international philatelic exhibitions anywhere and it was the exhibition at which the Duke of Edinburgh announced that Prince George of Wales, later King George V, was a stamp collector. The exhibition marked the fiftieth anniversary of the introduction of penny postage and the issue of the first stamps.

Penny Postage Jubilee: 1890 London Philatelic Exhibition, Committee Members Anniversary Dinner, May 19th. Two Souvenir Cards, one with 1840 1d. black (used) and 1841 1d., 1864-79 1d., 1880-81 1d. and 1881 1d. all unused on one side and Dinner menu on the reverse.

1890 London Philatelic Exhibition - Mauritius

About 2700 unissued Mauritius Britannia-seated stamps were overprinted L.P.E. 1890 in red from imperforate sheets remaindered in 1872, no longer valid as postage stamps. The original printers, Perkins Bacon, perforated the stamps at the exhibition and overprints and varieties were additionally made by M.P. Castle.
