On January 1, 1892, Ellis Island opened its doors as an immigration station. Not only was the United States ushering in thousands of immigrants, but across the world many people were relocating in search of a better life. Criminals were sent, often against their will, to form penal colonies. This month's stamp display shows many of these immigrations/migrations.
