This is the first United States stamp to feature the American Flag. From the 1869 Pictorial issue, it also is one of the first United States invert errors, all from that 1869 bicolored set. In this case, the blue, including the flags, was printed upside down in relation to the red eagle and shield.

Flags sometimes can be revealing. This stamp was issued on May 10, 1944 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the first Transcontinental Railroad. It pictures the ceremonial driving of the Golden Spike, connecting the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads on May 10, 1869, at Promontory Summit, Utah Territory.
